Rovers Campaign Hits New Heights

‘Reclaim the Rovers’ scaled new heights at the weekend as a group of hardy fans calling themselves the Geordie Munrobaggers faced autumn winds and steep slopes to do their bit for the campaign. The sixteen committed Rovers supporters (and a lion!) scaled two Munros in one day for the cause, making it to the top of both Glas Maol and Creag Leacach in Glenshee on Sunday.
The event was organised as a fundraiser for the campaign by Tom Phillips, a member of the Community Fundraising Group. He said, “The day went fantastically well. Everyone was enthusiastic and arrived properly prepared for the walk. We were blessed with good weather for the time of year, so we had great views from both summits which made it quite special.”
The group were joined by former Raith stalwart and experienced hill walker Chris Candlish and club mascot Roary Rover tagged along to add some fun for the younger walkers.
For more than half the group it was their first experience of hill walking of this kind with the first-timers ranging in age from 9 to 73!
Tom said, “Everyone seemed to really enjoy the day. Some people were talking about forming a Raith Rovers Hill Walking Club on the journey back, so I think the experience has had quite an effect on some of the group”.
It is anticipated that the group’s efforts will raise almost £2,000 in sponsorship as Reclaim the Rovers closes in on its target of £100,000.
